Monterey Wildlife Education: Will A Pest Control Company Remove A Rodent?

For most people, rodents and other wildlife pests are in separate categories. You probably think of rodents as being closer to insects in terms of the hassle they cause and the steps you would take to remove them from your home. After all, most people are more comfortable using lethal traps to take care of rats and mice than they are with larger animals like coyotes or skunks. If you think of rodents in this way, then it may make sense to hire a pest control company to remove a rodent. The thing to remember, however, is that they aren’t typically effective at doing so.



What They Say
No matter the pest control company you ask, they will most likely tell you that they can in fact handle rodents. They may even tell you their numerous success stories. The thing to remember, however, is that unless a company specializes in dealing with rodents, they won’t be able to deal with them effectively. Pest control companies will simply use the same methods on rodents that they are familiar with. Since they use insecticides and fumigation, they will try a similar approach with rodents.

They Rely On Poisons
This means that most pest control companies will rely on poisons as their only method of removing or controlling rodents. They will put out rat poison of some sort and then just wait for the animal to die. There are some serious issues with this. First of all, the poison will not work instantly. This gives the rodent time to return to its hidey hole and die there, suffering for hours or day. Now, you have a dead rodent somewhere in your home that you have to find and remove. If you don’t do so quickly, you will get a foul smell and plenty of flies or even maggots. To make matters worse, there is no guarantee as to what animal will find the poison. If you have pets or small children, it can pose a serious risk.

No Long –Term Solution
Poisons are also only a temporary solution. If you do manage to kill all the rodents with poison and find and remove all the carcasses, you still haven’t solved your problem. How were the rodents getting into your home? If you don’t seal up their entrance, new ones will just come inside and take their place.

Who To Hire
Now that you know that a pest control company will not take care of your rodent problem effectively, you need to figure out who to hire. Search for wildlife removal or control companies in your area. When choosing whom to hire, be sure they have experience working with rodents. Also, double check that they multiple methods and opt for humane ways of killing or removing the rodents.
